OEM vs ODM vs Private Label: Which One Do You Need?

OEM — you supply the design and own it; sample in 15-20 days, about 10-14 weeks to a first container. ODM — you start from a design already tooled and modify it; sample in 7-10 days, 8-11 weeks to a container. Private label — you take the design as it is and add your brand; sample in 10-15 days, 8-10 weeks. All three carry the same 100 pcs per design MOQ, and because wood needs no mould, all three cost only the $80-350 sample to develop.

So the choice is not really about money. It is about who owns the design, who carries development risk and how fast you reach a container. If it is your first order in the category, choose ODM or private label; move to OEM once you know which designs sell.

How to choose

Which model is yours · two questions
Choosing between OEM, ODM and private label If you have finished drawings you own, the model is OEM. If not, and you need the product changed, it is ODM. If the design is fine as it stands and only the branding changes, it is private label. Do you have finished drawings that you own? YES NO Does the product itself need to change? YES NO OEM you own the design ODM ours, modified PRIVATE LABEL brand only

All three carry the same MOQ, and because wood needs no mould the development cost is the sample either way. So the tree above is not about budget — it is about who owns the result and how fast you reach a container.

Answer these and the model picks itself
Question OEM ODM Private Label
Do you already have finished drawings you own? Yes → OEM — —
Do you want something no competitor can buy? OEM ODM with exclusivity No
Is speed to first container the priority? Slowest Fast Fastest
Is this your first order in the category? Risky Recommended Recommended
Do you need retail-ready branded packaging? Available Available Included
Do you have an in-house designer or engineer? Required Helpful Not needed

The mistake we see most often is a new brand commissioning a fully original OEM design for a first order. It costs little more in money — wood has no mould cost — but it costs 3-4 weeks and it commits 100 units to a design nobody has tested against real buyers. Start with ODM, learn what your customers complain about, then design the OEM piece that fixes it.

What each looks like in practice

OEM in practice

You send a CAD file for a cat wall shelf with a specific bracket spacing. We return DFM feedback — the bracket needs a 30 mm section to hold a screw, the panel is 40 mm over a standard board width and wastes material — plus a costed quotation. You approve the revised drawing, we sample in 15-20 days, you own the design.

ODM in practice

You pick an existing vintage pet bed, ask for it 80 mm wider, in rubberwood instead of pine, in a Pantone-matched sage, with a corduroy cushion. Patterns exist, so the sample comes back in 7-10 days. The modified version is held for you.

Private label in practice

You pick four designs unchanged, send a logo and packaging artwork, and get them laser-engraved with a printed colour box, hang tag and FNSKU labels. No engineering at all — the constraint is the 300-piece carton print minimum, not production.

Common questions on manufacturing models

What is the difference between OEM and ODM?

OEM means the buyer owns and supplies the design; the factory manufactures to it. ODM means the factory owns the base design and the buyer selects and modifies it. In practice the difference shows up in three places: who pays for development, who owns the result, and how long sampling takes — 15-20 days for OEM versus 7-10 days for ODM.

Is private label the same as ODM?

They overlap but are not the same. ODM is about the product — you change the design. Private label is about the brand — you take the design as it is and put your name, colourway and packaging on it. A private label order is effectively an ODM order with no engineering changes.

Which one is cheapest?

Private label, then ODM, then OEM — but the gap is smaller than it looks. Wooden furniture carries no mould cost (no mould cost - solid wood and panel parts are cnc-cut directly from drawings.), so OEM development is really just the sample charge of $80-350, refundable against bulk. The real cost difference is your own time and the risk of a second sample round.

Which one should a first-time buyer choose?

ODM or private label, almost always. It proves the category sells before you spend on development, and it reaches a container 2-3 weeks sooner. Move to OEM on the second or third order, once you know which designs move and what your customers actually complain about.

Can I switch from ODM to OEM later?

Yes, and it is the normal progression. Buyers typically start with three or four ODM designs, learn which sell, then commission an OEM design that fixes the specific things their customers ask for. The ODM designs usually stay in the range alongside it.

Who owns the design in each model?

OEM: Buyer owns the design. ODM: Factory owns the base design; modifications can be made exclusive to the buyer on request. Private Label: Buyer owns the brand; the design stays factory-owned unless exclusivity is agreed.

Can I get exclusivity on an ODM design?

Yes, agreed in writing at quotation stage, usually against an annual volume commitment for a territory or channel. Modifications developed specifically for you are not offered to other buyers even without a formal exclusivity clause.
